We cannot invest our way out of the plastic waste problem. But, we cannot regulate our way out of the plastic waste problem either. While both pathways are critical enablers, there is no magic solution that will make this problem go away. In fact, it’s that kind of thinking that got us into this mess in the first place – there is no “away.” Everything we produce and use has a lasting impact and when we only focus on the symptoms we are destined to continue cleaning up after unintended consequences.
Let’s look at a couple examples of how this kind of thinking gets us into trouble:
Countries and municipalities on multiple continents are implementing bans on single-use plastic products of all kinds, with perhaps the most notable being the EU’s directive issued and enacted earlier this year and banning a wide swath of single use plastic products from cutlery to straws to to-go packaging (like food and beverage containers and multi-layer plastic).
This all makes great sense, but are we just too hooked to change?
